Madrid, Sept 29: England captain David Beckham suffered a painful foot injury in Real Madrid's 2-0 defeat by Valencia on Saturday and does not know if he will be fit in time for the his team's Champions League match at Porto on Wednesday.
Beckham played the full 90 minutes of the Primera Liga game but the injury kept him out of training on Sunday and he was visibly hobbling when he made his way into a news conference at the club's Las Rozas training facility.
"I really don't know," Beckham told reporters when asked if he would be fit for the crucial Euro 2004 qualfying clash against Turkey on October 11. "It's hard to tell. It's the first day after the game and it's hurting a lot at the moment."
Club doctors said that the midfielder was suffering from an acute inflammation of the sole of his right foot and would require physiotherapy and rest for an unspecified period to deal with the injury.
"We'll just have to wait and see how it goes over the next day or two. Hopefully it'll be okay, but I'm not sure yet. I'm not sure if I'll be fit for Wednesday (when Real travel to Porto for a Champions League match).
"It will be up to the doctors, the physios and me to decide. There are two weeks to go before the Turkey game and there are a lot of big games to come before then. I'll concentrate on them first before worrying about Turkey," he added.
England lead Turkey by a point, but need to earn at least a draw to win their group and qualify automatically for next year's championship when the two sides meet in Istanbul.
Beckham, who joined Real for 35 million euros ($40.14 million) from Manchester United in June, has made an impressive start for the Spanish champions this season and has looked particularly at home in his new central midfield role.
But the 28-year-old said he was not concerned about whether or not he played the same role for England.
"You'll have to ask Mr (Sven-Goran) Eriksson," he said. "I've enjoyed playing in the middle for Real Madrid and hopefully I'll carry on in that position.
"For the national team I play a more right-sided role and that's fine by me. If I move in to the middle that's great, but for the moment I'm happy just to be playing and enjoying it."
