Lausanne, Jun 02: Disclosing that the US had made a suggestion for deploying Indian troops in Iraq, Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee today asserted that New Delhi would take a decision on it only after "clarifications" on certain issues. "Why the need for (Indian) force? Is it to maintain law and order or a fresh show of strength? How many days it may be needed? What is the road map and at whose command," he asked when referred to the issue during a press conference here. "We need clarifications on all these issues and that is why we have sent our ambassador to Iraq," Vajpayee said. Pointing out that there was a law in India and the US that required that their respective troops be stationed only under their respective commanders, he said "there will be further discussions on these. Many other countries have also raised questions. Let the discussions take place." Asked whether there was a change in the world situation after the Iraq war and that India should take an independent view of things or go along with the US, Vajpayee said India already had an independent approach from the beginning and was still firm on its non-aligned position in its efforts to make the world multi-polar.
