New Delhi, June 02: Budgetary allocation for the welfare of the disabled has been doubled during the Tenth Plan to Rs 1446 crore as against a total expenditure of Rs 742.41 crore in the Ninth Plan. The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment proposes to set up more than 100 district disability rehabilitation centres for the purpose of providing therapeutic services to the disabled in different parts of the country, according to the ministry's annual report.
The major thrust during the first year of the plan (2002-03) has been on establishment of 82 district disability rehabilitation centres and scholarship scheme for students with disabilities pursuing professional and technical courses.
One of the important programmes of the ministry is to economically empower persons with disability. Bureau Report
