The NDA fact-finding team on Monday said that West Bengal was a fit case for imposition of President`s rule and the Centre should order a CBI probe into the massacre of 11 persons in Garbeta in Midnapore district on its own if the Left Front government refused to give its consent.
The NDA fact-finding team on Monday said that West Bengal was a fit case for imposition of President`s rule and the Centre should order a CBI probe into the massacre of 11 persons in Garbeta in Midnapore district on its own if the Left Front government refused to give its consent.
Trinamool Congress, a NDA constituent, has been alleging that 18 of its activists were massacred in the incident.
BJP MP Vijay Goel, who led the team, which visited Choto Angaria village at Garbeta where the massacre allegedly took place, told a press conference in Kolkata, "Law and order machinery has collapsed and a jungle raj prevails in the state. West Bengal is a fit case for the promulgation of Article 356."
He said that the team would submit its report to the effect to NDA Convenor George Fernandes and it was for him to take up the issue with the Centre.
Goel urged Congress President Sonia Gandhi to clarify her party`s stand on the imposition of Central Rule in the state.
Congress chief whip in Lok Sabha, P R Dasmunshi had expressed similar opinion on imposition of President`s rule after visiting the spot, he added.
Sanjay Nirupam, Shiv Sena MP and a team member, said that it was difficult for the Centre to impose President`s rule since it did not have the majority in Rajya Sabha. It would, however, be easier for NDA government to impose Article 356 in the state if Congress extended support.
