Army headquarters in New Delhi have asked its formations in Jammu and Kashmir to observe utmost vigilance and follow strict security guidelines issued to tackle suicide attacks by Pakistani mercenary groups. Highly placed defence sources in New Delhi said that there were apparently some laxity which had led to Wednesday’s storming of the Rashtriya Rifles (RR) camp in Beerwah in central Kashmir resulting in the death of ten security personnel including a major.
The authorities in New Delhi, in the wake of spate of suicide attacks last year, mostly by cadres of the Lahore-based Lashkar-e-Toiba, had after intense deliberations between various security agencies, drawn up some security guidelines to combat such attacks. In Wednesday’s storming of the army camp in Beerwah in central Kashmir, the RR formations were found to be a bit lax, the sources said, adding that formations had been fore warned to be on ''top alert'' and enforce utmost vigilance after midnight. According to reports, the suicide squad walked into the RR premises around 1:00 pm and were only noticed when they sprayed the camp with their assault rifles once deep inside. This was the second major attack on security forces camp in less than a month. The sources said that questions were being posed as to how the suicide attackers could make their way inside, as an unofficial night curfew is imposed within a kilometre radius around all security installations and entry is only through password.
