Apprehending trouble during Monday's Delhi bandh called by industry owners and workers and transporters, the city government on Sunday announced that schools in the capital will remain closed on Monday and a large section of public transport operators decided not to run their buses. A high-level meeting, chaired by Chief Minister Shiela Dikshit this morning to review the situation, decided to keep the government, government-aided and public schools closed as a precautionary measure. The meeting was attended by Delhi education and Industry Minister Narendra Nath, Chief Secretary P S Bhatnagar, the Delhi Education Director and the Education Secretary among other senior officials of the state government.
Dr Narendra Nath told UNI, ''A meeting to review the situation was held this morning under the chief minister and the situation was reviewed. The security arrangements made were also discussed.''
''All the schools in the city have been advised to remain closed keeping in mind the security of the children,'' he said. Subsequently, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi and New Delhi Municipal Council also decided to keep their schools closed for a day on Monday.
The minister said the director of education and the secretary of education were also consulted and everybody was of the view that ''no chances should be taken on the issue.'' Several schools in the neighbouring Noida, Gurgaon and Ghaziabad too have announced Monday as a holiday. The decision to shut down the schools was also influenced by the announcement by the school bus operators of not to run their buses on Monday.
