Army has been called in to help evacuate thousands of marooned people in Bangladesh as late monsoon floods inundated large areas in northern and western parts of the country, officials said.
“Soldiers were sent by boat on Sunday for rescue operations,” the officials said. They further added, “The situation was grave in Meherpur and Uadanga districts bordering India's flood-hit West Bengal and heavy rains and rush of upstream water rendered thousands of people homeless there.”

Press reports said that floods worsened in the districts of Rajashahi, Chapainawbganj, Kushtia, Chaudanga and Meherpur on Sunday as major rivers were swollen with water from across the border.
