A bandh called by the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) in protest against the attack on its leader S Ramadoss on Sunday began in Pondicherry on Monday. The territorial administration has declared a holiday for educational institutions. Business establishments and shops remained closed this morning and not many buses and taxis were seen on the roads. Attendance in government offices and industrial units was also less.
Meanwhile, tension continued to prevail in Abishegampakkam, where Dr Ramadoss was attacked, and Thavalakuppam. Police pickets have been posted in the area and senior police officials were also camping there. Police have registered cases against more than 200 people in connection with the attack on a complaint from PMK leader M Manjini.
Dr Ramadoss, who was on a flag-hoisting campaign last evening, was attacked by a 1000-strong mob, said to be sympathisers and activists of Dalit Panthers of India (DPI). Though Dr Ramadoss escaped narrowly, 15 people in his convoy were injured. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) President M Karunanidhi has condemned the attack on Mr Ramadoss. Expressing shock over the incident, Mr Karunanidhi said in a statement in Pondicherry on Monday though it was heartening to note that the PMK leader had escaped narrowly, the growing trend of conducting political activity through violence was unacceptable.
