Barring parts of north 24 Parganas and Nadia districts, the overall flood situation in West Bengal improved on Monday even as the toll in the disaster crossed the 1000 mark.
Official sources, confirming 906 deaths, said that nearly 100 people were still missing and feared to have been washed away.
The sources said that Murshidazbad alone accounted for 496 deaths, followed by Birbhum (228), Nadia (76), Bardhaman (51), Hooghly (25), Midnapore (13), Bankura (8), North 24 Parganas (4), Howrah (3) and north Dinajpur (2). In Murshidabad 142 people died in Kandi itself. They said that the situation remained grim in Bongaon, Gaighata, Gopalnagar, Swaroopnagar in north 24 Parganas district and Krishnaganj, Tehatta and Hanskhali in Nadia district.
A report from Bongaon, however, said the toll in north 24 Parganas crossed the 100 mark as the situation there and in Basirhat sub-division worsened.
The rescue and relief operation launched by the administration was proving to be inadequate.
“At least 40 bodies were cremated at Habra under the supervision of the Habra police station during the last two days. The bodies were recovered from Bagda, Bangaon and Gopalnagar areas. Several bodies were seen floating in the flood water,” eyewitnesses said.
At least 30 persons have died in Gopalnagar circle, the report said. Relief camps were sheltering nearly 10,000 evacuees.

“Two bodies have been recovered from Baduria and three from Swaroopnagar areas under Basirhat sub-division so far while four BSF jawans were missing since September 30,” an official source said. Bureau Report
