Country's progress could be achieved by exploiting the abundant natural resources and ensuring an equitable distribution of wealth so generated, and not by depending only on liberalisation, former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda has said. Participating at a seminar on 'liberalisation and equitable distribution' in Mysore on Sunday, he said privatisation had led to the accumulation of wealth in a few hands.
He recalled that the Voluntary Disclosure Scheme (VDS), introduced during his tenure as prime minister, had helped in adding Rs 10,800 crore to the national exchequer.
Former Deputy Chief Minister of Karnataka and State Janata Dal (S) Chief Siddaramiah said his party was not against liberalisation, but did not subscribe to the view that it would bring about all round development in the country.
