The Centre is waiting for the approval of the planning commission for its proposed Rs 200 crore plan to develop cities of historical and cultural importance in the country. Addressing a press conference in Hyderabad on Sunday, Union minister for Urban Development and Poverty Alleviation Jagmohan said initially Varanasi, Dwaraka (both in Uttar Pradesh), Madurai, Tiruchirapalli (both in Tamil Nadu), Puri (Orissa), Ujjain (MP) and Warangal (Andhra Pradesh) have been identified for `reconstruction` to revive their Pristine glory. These cities would be converted into ``thriving centers for a new awakening,`` he said, adding that in future at least one city in each state would be identified under the scheme. The government aimed to provide a new direction to urban India as cities were denied due attention. Though 90 per cent of the government revenue and 60 per cent of the gross domestic product were contributed by the cities, only 0.6 per cent of the GDP was given back to the cities at the municipal level, as he informed.
