BJP on Thursday accused the CPI(M) government in West Bengal of attempting to divert peoples' attention from the flood havoc by attacking Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee rather than undertaking any relief measures.
A BJP delegation, comprising Vice President Kailashpati Mishra and General Secretary Venkaiah Naidu, urged Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee to provide immediate material and financial assistance to the state government.
“We also urge the chief minister to convene a meeting of all political parties so as to chalk out a plan of action to provide succour to the people of the state,” Naidu told reporters in New Delhi. Mishra said that the state government should stop politicising the issue and concentrate on how best the people of the flood-hit state could be helped. Flood waters had submerged large areas of Calcutta also rendering thousands homeless, he added.
