Florida's vote counters in some of the counties, where recounting is on manually, are now divining voters' intentions. Cameras showed how the counters hold a ballot against a light, peer at it intently to see whether the hole is made properly or whether the piece of paper falls out when punched has moved sufficiently to enable the counter to divine the voter's intentions. It went to the extreme in one booth when many that had been punched twice and rejected were re-examined and validated. The process is so slow that county officials say that they will approach the courts for extension of the deadline beyond Tuesday. Columnist Krauthammer pleaded in an article in ‘Time’, “In a system as durable but delicate as America's, elections are determined by counting, not spinning or suing. When 100 million people go to polls, there will inevitably be errors, omissions, confusions. Are we now going to settle elections based on the intent of the voter rather than his action? When the authorized vote comes out in Florida, the candidate with the lower number should do a nixon, pick up the phone and show some grace.” Bureau Report
