Flood waters inundated another Bangladesh district of Jessore bordering India forcing over lakhs of people to flee their homes for dry land even as the bus service between Dhaka and Calcutta was suspended following surging flood situation, official sources said on Thursday. “Floods, which this week inundateb six Bangladeshi districts bordering India's flood-hit West Bengal state, have spread to the seventh district, Jessore, 136 cm southwest of Dhaka,” officials of Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief said.
Report reaching Dhaka said that the late monsoon floods have wreaked havoc in Jessore halting import and export of goods through the Benapole border with the movement of trucks and lorries coming to a halt. Benapole, the largest landport of Bangladesh bordering India, became inoperative from Wednesday due to heavy floods. “The Dhaka-Calcutta direct bus service that moves through Benapole contact route stands suspended since Wednesday due to the flood situation in Benapole,” Chairman of the state-run Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation told PTI on Thursday. The much-awaited direct goods train services between India and Bengladesh which was scheduled to start along the Benapole-Petrapole route have been postponed due to the floods in the border areas. An estimated 1.7 million people in Bangladesh have been either rendered homeless or affected by the current floods. Bureau Report
