New Delhi: Visiting the doctor's clinic for your regular monthly check-ups are evidently an important routine that you should follow.

However, there are ways you can be your own doctor and check what your health says about you and one of the best and most popular ways to do that is the spoon test.

It's simple and can reveal a lot about your health issues and signs and symptoms that you may have ignored at some point within a minute.

Simply follow the below steps to do the test:

  1. Do the test first thing in the morning
  2. Make sure you're empty stomach
  3. Avoid drinking water before doing the test
  4. Take a clean spoon and glide its base over the entire surface of your tongue
  5. Slip the spoon in a plastic bag and keep it under the sun or any bright light
  6. After a minute, take the spoon out of the bag and don't touch the base

What do you see?

Odours:

If the spoon does not have any stains, discolouration or an unpleasant odour, that is an indication of perfect health.

If you can detect an unpleasant odour, it can be an indication of a lung problem. The odour will be much worse than your morning breath, which could point towards a possible lung infection.

If the odour is pungent – like ammonia – it is a sign of a kidney ailment.

If you sense a fruity odour, then it could point towards diabetes, in case of which, you need to get a blood test done. This happens due to the presence of ketones that make odour sweet and fruity.

Stains:

You may be able to see four different coloured stains – all of which mean different things.

If you see a white stain, that means you may suffer from a respiratory infection.

A purple coloured stain indicates poor blood circulation, bronchitis or high cholesterol levels.

Yellow stains are a sign of a dysfunctional thyroid gland. These stains will have a thick coating.

An orange hued stain indicates a kidney disease. Chronic kidney disease can cause mouth tissues turn pale due to anemia, or orange due to carotene-like deposits.

Whatever the outcome, don't hesitate to visit the doctor for consultation and further investigations.
