New Delhi: Yemen is currently battling world's worst cholera outbreak amid the planet's largest humanitarian crisis since 1944, says the United Nations.
This has crippled health, water and sanitation facilities in the country, creating ideal conditions for diseases to spread.
UN officials said the country is on the brink of famine, with over 60 per cent of the population not knowing where their next meal will come from.
Cholera is an acute diarrheal illness caused by consuming contaminated food or water. The infection is generally caused by the bacterium Vibrio cholerae.
Symptoms generally develop within few days of infection and are often mild, but can sometimes be severe.
Infected individuals may show the following signs and symptoms - diarrhea, nausea and vomiting, dehydration, stomach and leg cramps. Seizures may occur in severe cases and in children.
But cholera can be easily treated using oral rehydration solution (ORS) to prevent dehydration and shock. Other treatment options include IV fluids and antibiotics.
