New Delhi: You've heard how prolonged sitting can wreak havoc on your health. Desk job has been linked to obesity, cardiovascular disease, diabetes. Many people who take a desk job often find themselves putting on weight, particularly around their belly.

But, you can take some healthy steps to reduce your risks for various health conditions as well as avoid gaining excessive weight. Here's how:

Tip 1

Avoid soda and other energy drinks which are loaded with artificial sweeteners and unhealthy, leading to weight gain. They will not only increase your calorie intake, but also cause damage to your heart, teeth, digestive systems. Instead sip on water which will help flush toxins out from your body and keep you hydrated. In fact, a recent study reveals that water, which has not fat, protein or carbohydrates, may help you lose weight.

Tip 2

Choose healthy snacks over junk foods or sweet treats that are easily available in the cafeteria. Make a habit of carrying some healthy snacks from home, for instance, a bowl of fruits such as cucumbers, apples, bananas, small packs of nuts and whole grain crackers are some good options.

Tip 3

Studies have found significant health benefits associated with standing. Standing lowers your risk of weight gain and obesity.. It increases energy, burns extra calories, tones muscles, improves posture, increases blood flow and boosts metabolism. Stand, instead of sit while making/taking phone calls.

Tip 4

Chewing gum at desk may give you more than fresh breath. A 2009 study published in Physiology & Behavior found that chewing gum can help you remain alert, reduce anxiety, stress and salivary cortisol - a stress hormone that increases fat cells, leading to increased fat retention, especially around the belly area.

Tip 5

Always take stairs even if you have the option or don't have to take it. Stair climbing improves your cardiovascular fitness, strengthens muscles in your legs and burns more calories per minute than jogging.
