Former Attorney General Soli Sorabjee passes away due to COVID-19, say family sources

Former Attorney General of India, Soli Sorabjee passed away at the age of 91 years.

New Delhi: Former Attorney General of India, Soli Sorabjee passed away on Friday (April 30) at the age of 91 years.

According to news agency PTI, his family said he passed away due to the COVID-19 virus.

Sorabjee was a renowned human rights lawyer. He was appointed by the United Nations (UN) as a Special Rapporteur for Nigeria, in 1997. Though this he reported on the human rights situation in that country.

Soli Sorabjee had served as the Attorney General for India from 1989-90 and then from 1998-2004.

He was admitted to a private hospital in South Delhi after getting infected with COVID-19.

Sorabjee was also involved in many cases for defending the freedom of speech and expression and has been instrumental in revoking censorship orders and bans on publications.

His publications on this subject include: The Laws of Press Censorship in India (1976); The Emergency, Censorship and the Press in India, 1975-77 (1977).
