    The Chief Election Commissioner, Rajiv Kumar, announced on Wednesday that assembly elections will take place in Tripura on February 16, in Nagaland and Meghalaya on February 27, with the counting of votes to occur on March 2.

    • Nagaland Assembly: March 12
    • Meghalaya Assembly: March 15
    • Tripura Assembly: March 22

    All three state assemblies have a total of 60 members each.

    Currently, Tripura is governed by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), while the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) holds power in Nagaland and the National People's Party (NPP) governing Meghalaya, is the only political party from the northeast region with national party recognition.

    "Our teams would be ready to serve more than 62.8 lakh electors combined in the three states including 31.47 lakh female electors, 97,000 80+ voters, and 31,700 PwD voters," says CEC Rajiv Kumar.

    "Over 1.76 lakh first-time voters to participate in the elections in Tripura, Nagaland, and Meghalaya, says Rajiv Kumar.

    9,125 polling stations to be set up for assembly elections in Tripura, Nagaland, Meghalaya

    For the upcoming assembly elections in the three northeastern states, as many as 9,125 polling stations will be set up across 180 constituencies, says CEC.

    "Over 80 % PS in rural areas. Webcasting facility available in 70% of polling stations," he says.

    "It is more than the national average of 969," says CEC Kumar.

    "States have also witnessed higher women voter turnout % than males in the 2018 Assembly Elections," he adds.

    He also says that the Election Commission visited three states from January 11 to January 15 and held detailed review meetings.

    "We also met political parties and have responded to almost all state-specific issues raised by them and measures to be put in place as per contextual and felt requirements of each state," says CEC Rajiv Kumar.

    Addressing the press conference, CEC Rajiv Kumar says that each election has its own set of challenges.

    "Despite difficult terrains, these 3 states (Nagaland, Meghalaya, and Tripura) have set an example for the rest of the country in terms of participation. ECI is committed to a conduct free, fair, participative, inclusive, inducement free and peaceful election," says Kumar.

    The term of the Legislative Assemblies of Nagaland, Meghalaya and Tripura are due to expire on March 12, March 15 and March 22 respectively. Elections are to be scheduled for 60 ACs in each state.

It is notable that the three state assemblies have a strength of 60 members each.


While the term of the Nagaland assembly ends on March 12, the term of the Meghalaya assembly will conclude on March 15, and Tripura's assembly on March 22.



The three northeastern states will become the first of the nine states going to assembly polls this year.


In Tripura, there is a BJP government, while in Nagaland, the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party is in power. 


National People's Party, which is the only party from the northeast to have national party recognition, has the government in Meghalaya.
