Mumbai rains LIVE: IMD warns old buildings in Mumbai at risk of collapse as heavy rainfall lashes city

India`s financial capital Mumbai on Friday received heavy rainfall, accompanied by wind, which caused waterlogging in several areas and left many low-lying areas in the financial capital inundated. The first spell of heavy rain of this monsoon season saw maximum rainfall in South Mumbai where Colaba recorded 22 cm out of which 15 cm were recorded in the last three hours alone.

  • Complaints of water logging received from these areas:

    1) Bhulabai Desai Road

    2) Bindu Madhav Junction

    3) Worli naka,

    4) Hindmata Junction

    5) Dhobi Ghat Cuff parade

    6) Chirabazar

    7) C P Office

    8) Byculla Police Stn

  • Due to incessant rains since morning, low-lying areas of Mumbai such as Sion, Matunga and Hindmata have been waterlogged.

  • IMD UPDATE FOR JULY 3:

    Heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places very likely over and Konkan & Goa. Strong Wind (speed mulling 50-60 kmplt) very likely over Southwest & Westcentral Arabian Sea. Squally Weather likely over southeast and east central Arabian Sea and along & off Maharashtra-Goa-Karnataka coasts and Lakshadweep. Fishermen are advised not to venture into sea over these areas. 

  • Moderate showers were recorded on Wednesday night at IMD’s Colaba station. In 24 hours ending at 8.30 am on Thursday, the Colaba observatory recorded 28.8 mm of rainfall while Santacruz station recorded 6.5 mm during the same period: IMD

  • IMD update: 

    High convergence of strong moist westerly/southwesterly winds at lower tropospheric levels from the Arabian sea very likely along west coast till July 6 and over plains of northwest India & central India from July 3, 2020. Under its influence fairly widespread to widespread rainfall activity with isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall with isolated extremely heavy falls is very likely over north Konkan on July 3 and 4. Gujarat region on July 4 and 5 and over Madhya Maharashtra on July 4. Isolated heavy to very heavy falls is also very likely over Coastal Karnataka during July 2-4 and over Saurashtra & Kutch during July 4-6.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) had on Thursday forecast "heavy to very heavy rainfall'' at isolated places in Mumbai, and adjoining areas of Palghar and Thane for Friday and Saturday. A Red alert warning has been issued for Raigad with extremely heavy rains expected on Saturday and an Orange alert for Mumbai and adjoining coastal districts for the next two days.


Rainfall is likely to lash the west coast of Maharashtra and interior of Maharashtra till July 5, according to the IMD. Meanwhile, the Mumbai Police has advised citizens to stay indoors and not leave their houses unless it is very important.
