The fire broke out at a rubber factory in the Pawane industrial area in neighbouring Navi Mumbai on Friday afternoon, PTI reported quoting an official.

The fire was reported around 4 pm at the unit located in the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) area, following which eight fire brigade vehicles were rushed to the spot, he said.

Fire fighting operations were on, the official added. Pictures of plumes of black smoke billowing from the factory circulated on social media.

Thick black smoke from the rubber factory enveloped the area which made fire-fighting and rescue operations difficult, officials said.

Personnel from the Turbhe police station have been deployed for crowd control as a large number of onlookers also gathered at the spot, said a police official.
