The police were stunned to see the state of the victim's body, which was not just ridden with grave injury marks, but also bore signs of extreme torture.
An initial investigation showed that sharp-edged objects were inserted into her private parts while her head was smashed.
Police suspect that her attackers may have run over her with a vehicle in order to disfigure her so they could hide her identity.
A forensic team later confirmed that the victim was gang-raped and mutilated with sharp-edged weapons.
"The victim was tortured and her body was mutilated and tortured after the gang rape.
“She was killed after being raped involving at least seven people.
“Her skull was smashed in a way which indicates that she was run over by a vehicle in order to hide her identity," the forensic team said.
The probe also found drugs in viscera samples taken from her body.
The incident happens barely a week after the Supreme Court sent four convicts in the December 16, 2012 Nirbhaya gang-rape and murder case to the gallows.
According to police, the girl was abducted in Haryana's Rohtak when she was on her way to work on May 9.
She was then taken to a secluded place where she was gang-raped by seven people.
The attackers then mutilated her body which was found in an empty plot in Rohtak on May 11.
She lived with her parents in neighbouring Sonepat district of Haryana.
When she did not come back home, her parents lodged a missing complaint with the police.

A 30-year-old Dalit girl was brutally raped and murdered. The victim had 38 injury marks and the body was badly mutilated, including the private parts.
According to the post-mortem report submitted by Alappuzha Medical College, there were 38 "ante-mortem" injuries, including small aberrations.
The report said that the victim, a law student, suffered a fatal injury across her chest of 13-cm length that reaches till her liver.
The victim was tortured with a sharp weapon pushed inside her vagina which pierced her uterus and eventually her intestines came out.

A woman, in her mid-20s, was brutally gang-raped and murdered in Uttar Pradesh.
Her body was found outside a primary school building in Balsinkheda village.
She reportedly had put up a brave fight against the rapists.

The private parts were bleeding profusely suggesting attack with a blunt object.
She was abducted in a vehicle before her extreme sexual abuse and violence that made her bleed profusely.

A minor girl was brutally gang-raped by three men and her body was found in a mutilated state under a tree in Maharashtra's Kopardi village.
All three accused were arrested by the local crime branch after the incident occurred on 13 July.
The incident took place on July 13 when the victim was returning after meeting her grandfather.
She was accosted by the accused who gang-raped her violently before throttling her to death.
Her both shoulders were found to be dislocated.
According to The Asian Age, the victim was a ninth standard girl.

Nirbhaya was brutally gang-raped and assualted. Her body was badly mutilated.
The 23-year-old victim, a physiotherapy intern, was beaten, gang-raped, and tortured in a private bus in which she was traveling with her friend.
Six people had raped and assualted her.
She was shifted to a hospital in Singapore for treatment, but sucummed to her injuries.
The incident was widely condemned in India and abroad.
