Supporters of DMK's local strongman celebrated on Thursday after the Supreme Court granted him bail in a money laundering case. Local DMK workers and Balaji supporters set off fireworks and shouted praise for the former minister. Some party workers proudly waved DMK flags.

Balaji was arrested by the ED on June 14 last year in connection with a money laundering case involving an alleged cash-for-jobs scam while serving as transport minister in an earlier AIADMK government.

On August 12, 2018, the ED filed a 3,000-page charge sheet against Balaji. On October 19, the high court dismissed Balaji's previous bail application. A local court has also dismissed his bail petitions three times.
