Kumar of Field Artillery Regiment, Who was on a sentry duty, killed two militants and injured one during the firing.


At around 4 am three militants barged into an army camp in Kupwara and killed three army personnel and injured seven.


Kumar who was guarding within the premises of the camp saw militants advancing towards him.


"At 4 a.m I was carrying out my duty at Pratap Gate when suddenly I heard some firing noise. I later called up the unit, they informed me about the militant attack. I became alert and took position. I saw two militants approaching me and started firing," he said.


"When they started firing I retaliated at them. During the exchange of gun shots, I killed two militants and recovered two AK-47s from them," he added.


Running out of ammunition, Kumar moved out of his bunker and tried to pick the weapon of the slain terrorists to engage the third.


The terrorist fired and injured him and thus managed to escape.


In the gunfight, Captain Ayush Yadav, Subedar Bhoop Singh Gujjar and Naik B Venkata Ramanna were killed.


Five other soldiers were injured. They are being treated at the army's 92 Base Hospital in Srinagar.
