The encounter broke out in Fateh Kadal locality of Srinagar.
JAMMU: At least three terrorists and a police personnel were killed shortly after a fierce encounter broke out in Jammu and Kashmir's Fateh Kadal locality of Srinagar in the wee hours of Wednesday.
News agency ANI reported that three terrorists and 1 policeman were killed in the Srinagar encounter.
According to reports, the joint operation by the Army, J&K Police and the CRPF has now concluded but a search has been launched to ascertain if some more terrorists are holed up in the area.
Imitiyaz Ismail Parray, SSP, Srinagar, also informed reporters that three top terrorists have been eliminated in the encounter and one policeman also lost his life.
The police are trying to ascertain the identity of the three slain terrorists, he added.
The encounter began after the security forces received specific intelligence inputs regarding the presence of some hardcore terrorists in the area.
The security forces then cordoned off the entire area and launched a massive combing and search operation to flush out the terrorists holed up in the area.
It was reported that a top Lashkar-e-Toiba commander was among the terrorists holed up in the area, said reports.
As a precautionary measure, mobile internet services have been suspended and the entire area has been cordoned off.
The security forces had last week eliminated a top Hizbul Mujahideen commander Mannan Wani, whose killing had triggered tension in the Aligarh Muslim University in Uttar Pradesh where some Kashmiri students were slapped with sedition for holding a prayer meeting for the slain terrorist.
