Malik had gone underground on Thursday while other senior separatist leaders were placed under house arrest by the authorities to prevent a march called against the killing of a youth in security firing earlier this week.

Malik and his supporters started the march towards city centre Lal Chowk, but the police intercepted them in Sarai Bala area. They took Malik into preventive custody.

Separatists had announced a valley-wide shutdown and protests on Friday against the death of Adil Farooq Magrey in Zanawpora village of Shopian district in security force firing on Tuesday.

Magrey was killed when a stone pelting mob attacked the security forces to prevent an anti-militancy operation.
