Tuesday's deluge in Mumbai recorded nearly a month's average rainfall in a single day. It had halted train services and led to flight cancellations.

More heavy rains had been recorded on Wednesday, forcing the government to order schools and colleges to remain closed.

The Mumbai-based Santa Cruz observatory of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) registered 331.4 mm rainfall and claimed it as the heaviest since the July 26, 2005 record of 944 mm.

According to the Regional Meteorological Centre, Mumbai, heavy rainfall likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Konkan and in districts of North Madhya Maharshtra for August 30 and 31.
