The rupee pared initial gains and settled 8 paise lower at 82.86 (provisional) against the US dollar on Tuesday, weighed by a strong greenback overseas and sustained foreign fund outflows. At the interbank foreign exchange market, the rupee opened on a positive note at 82.69 against the greenback, but pared the gains and fell to an intra-day low of 82.92. The domestic currency finally settled at 82.86, down 8 paise over its previous close of 82.78.

Silver prices rose by Rs 1,350 to Rs 70,921 per kilogram in futures trade as participants widened their bets amid a firm spot demand. On the Multi Commodity Exchange, silver contracts for March delivery gained Rs 1,350 or 1.94 per cent to Rs 70,921 per kg in 23,342 lots. Analysts said the rise in silver prices was mainly due to fresh positions built up by participants amid a positive trend in the market. Globally, silver was trading 2.64 per cent higher at USD 24.68 per ounce in New York.

Gold price increased by Rs 535 to Rs 55,713 per 10 grams in futures trade as speculators created fresh positions on a firm spot demand. On the Multi Commodity Exchange, gold contracts for February delivery traded higher by Rs 535 or 0.97 per cent at Rs 55,713 per 10 grams in a business turnover of 13,942 lots. Fresh positions built up by participants led to the rise in gold prices, analysts said. Globally, gold was trading 1.42 per cent higher at USD 1,852.20 per ounce in New York.

Guar seed prices declined by Rs 7 to Rs 5,962 per 10 quintal in the futures trade amid increasing supplies from producing regions. On the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange, guar seed contracts for January delivery fell by Rs 7 or 0.12 per cent to Rs 5,962 per 10 quintal with an open interest of 28,295 lots. Marketmen attributed the downward trend in guar seed prices to increasing supplies from growing regions.

Guar gum prices fell by Rs 30 to Rs 12,670 per five quintal in the futures market as traders offloaded their holdings in line with a weak trend in the spot market. On the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange, guar gum for January delivery declined by Rs 30 or 0.24 per cent to Rs 12,670 per five quintal in 16,825 lots. Marketmen said slackness in demand in the spot market and ample supplies from growing regions put pressure on guar gum prices.

Coriander prices gained Rs 32 to Rs 8,618 per quintal in futures trade as speculators increased their holdings, tracking a firm trend in the spot market. On the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange, coriander contracts for April delivery traded higher by Rs 32 or 0.37 per cent at Rs 8,618 per quintal with an open interest of 4,695 lots. A firm trend in the spot market and restricted supplies from producing regions pushed up coriander prices, market analysts said.

Cottonseed oil cake prices rose by Rs 53 to Rs 2,985 per quintal in futures trade as speculators created fresh positions amid higher demand. On the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange, cottonseed oil cake for January delivery traded up by Rs 53 or 1.78 per cent at Rs 2,985 per quintal with an open interest of 32,160 lots. Marketmen said raising of positions by participants amid increasing demand from cattle-feed makers mainly influenced cottonseed oil cake prices.

Zinc prices fell by 0.11 per cent to Rs 264.20 per kilogram in the futures trade as speculators reduced their exposure taking negative cues from the spot market. On the Multi Commodity Exchange, zinc contracts for January delivery traded lower by 30 paise or 0.11 per cent at Rs 269.70 per kg in 2,112 lots. Analysts said offloading of positions by participants owing to slackened demand from consuming industries in the physical market mainly weighed on zinc prices.

Aluminium prices fell by Re 1 to Rs 208.55 per kg in the futures market as participants trimmed their positions on a weak trend in the spot market. On the Multi Commodity Exchange, aluminium for delivery in January declined by Re 1 or 0.48 per cent to Rs 208.55 per kg in 4,059 lots. Analysts said cutting down of positions by participants on easing demand from consuming industries mainly kept aluminium prices lower.

Crude oil prices rose by Rs 98 to Rs 6,706 per barrel in futures trade as participants increased their positions following a firm spot demand. On the Multi Commodity Exchange, crude oil for January delivery traded higher by Rs 98 or 1.48 per cent at Rs 6,706 per barrel in 5,631 lots. Analysts said raising of bets by participants kept crude oil prices higher in futures trade. Globally, West Texas Intermediate crude oil was up by 1.36 per cent at USD 81.35 per barrel, and Brent crude traded 1.19 per cent higher at USD 86.93 per barrel in New York.

Copper prices rose by 0.46 per cent to Rs 724.50 per kilogram in the futures market on the back of higher spot demand. On the Multi Commodity Exchange, copper contracts for delivery in January traded higher by Rs 3.35 or 0.46 per cent at Rs 724.50 per kg in a business turnover of 3,982 lots. Analysts attributed the rise in copper prices to raising of bets by participants.
Stock market live updates: Govt hikes windfall tax on crude oil, export of diesel, ATF
Government has raised the windfall profit tax levied on domestically produced crude oil as well as on the export of diesel and ATF, in line with firming international oil prices, according to an official order. The levy on crude oil produced by companies such as Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) has been increased to Rs 2,100 per tonne from Rs 1,700 per tonne, the order dated January 2, said. Crude oil pumped out of the ground and from below the seabed is refined and converted into fuel like petrol, diesel and aviation turbine fuel (ATF). The government has also raised the tax on the export of diesel to Rs 6.5 per litre, from Rs 5 and the same on overseas shipments of ATF to Rs 4.5 a litre, from Rs 1.5 a litre. The new tax rates are effective from January 3.

Sensex, Nifty live: Maruti Suzuki India logs 28% rise in exports
Maruti Suzuki India on Tuesday reported a 28 per cent rise in exports at 2,63,068 units in 2022, its highest ever overseas shipments. The company's previous highest exports was achieved in 2021 with 2,05,450 units. The highest exported models in 2022 were Dzire, Swift, S-Presso, Baleno and Brezza, the company said in a statement.
Stock market live: Zomato stock declines 5%
Shares of online food delivery platform Zomato declined 5 percent a day after its co-founder and Chief Technology Officer Gunjan Patidar resigned from the post. The stock went lower by 4.31 per cent to Rs 57.65 on the BSE. At the NSE, it fell 4.97 per cent to Rs 57.30. In volume terms, 14.86 lakh shares of the company were traded at the BSE in morning trade, while 2.20 crore shares on the NSE.

The broader NSE Nifty gained 35.10 points or 0.19 per cent to end at 18,232.55.
