Live updates: Heavy rains to lash Mumbai, suburbs; orange alert declared

Due to heavy rainfall forecast by IMD, the State government has declared a holiday for schools and junior colleges.

  • Cloudy sky with moderate rains likely to lash the city and suburbs. 

  • According to IMD, "Intermittent rain or showers with possibility of heavy falls at few places in city and suburbs."

All the officers and employees of the railway are taking prompt action to ensure that the passengers do not face any kind of inconvenience, says Railway Minister Piyush Goyal.
     

  • Train services have been severely hit in Mumbai due to incessant rainfall since Tuesday. The Western, Central Railways have diverted, rescheduled or cancelled the trains plying on the route. Due to heavy downpour, the state government too has declared a holiday for schools and junior colleges.

  • A six-year-old child was found dead on Thursday after he fell into an open gutter in Mumbai's Nala Sopara area. The incident occurred as several drains in the area were opened due to torrential rainfall happening in Mumbai and suburbs over the past two days.

  • Mumbai City Meteorological Centre forecasts that in some places in the city and suburbs, heavy rainfall is likely to be heavy at 3:15 pm.

  • The water level has receded in almost all parts of Mumbai. NDRF teams have been kept on alert and on stand by at Kurla, Parel and Andheri areas of the city, news agency ANI says.

  • Boat recue service has been started from King's Circle station till Manva Seva Sang station by National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) to help anyone who has been stranded due to waterlogging amif heavy rainfall.

  • Electicity has been cut off in areas adjoining to Mumbai including Nalasopara, Virar, and Vasai due to excessive rainfall. Over 2 lakh people are suffering power outage due to the rains.

     

  • Rainfall in Mumbai's Santacruz crosses 3,000 mm mark on Thursday, September 5. Santacruz witnessed 3078.2 mm of rainfall till Thursday morning while Colaba recorded 2162.2 mm rainfall. The respective record rainfall marks were crossed earlier in 2010 for Colaba and 2011 for Santacruz.

     

  • 217.4 mm rainfall recorded in Mumbai on Wednesday from 8:30 am to 8:30 pm, the second-highest rainfall recorded in the ongoing monsoon season in Mumbai. Earlier, Mumbai witnessed a record rainfall of 375 mm from July 1-2, the highest of this monsoon.

     

  • As many as 20 flights from the Mumbai airport have been cancelled due to the incessent rainfall in the city and waterlogging on the airport runway areas. Around 300 other flights stand delayed over heavy rainfall.

  • The weather department has issued an orange alert in Mumbai and adjoining areas for Thursday, entailing heavy to very heavy rainfall in isolated areas. A green alert has been issued for Friday, forecasting slight relief for Mumbaikars from the torrential downpour.

  • Western Railway, Chief Public Relations Officer says, "Three trains, Surat-Mumbai Central, Mumbai Central-Surat, & Bandra T -VAPI cancelled due to heavy rains & water-logging, at Nallasopara in Mumbai., news agency ANI reports.

  • Local trains services- Western line, Harbour line, and Central line begin plying with minor delays due to incessent rain and waterlogging in the city. Central line trains are running 20 minutes late, Western line 20 minutes late and Harbour line 15 minutes late.

  • Passengers were clicked sleeping outside the Mumbai domestic Airport due to flight delays, caused by rainfall in the city, news agency ANI said.

  • In view of heavy rains today & rainfall forecasts. As a precautionary measure, a holiday is declared for all schools and junior colleges in Mumbai, Thane and Kokan regions for Thursday, September 5, 2019, says Maharashtra state government.
     

Mumbai continues to cripple under incessant rainfall, with the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting heavier showers in the city and suburbs on Thursday. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is also likely to occur in central Maharashtra and Marathwada, said IMD. The MET Dept has issued a red alert and predicted torrential rains in Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Raigad over the next 24 hours as low pressure builds over the Bay of Bengal. Due to heavy rainfall forecast by IMD, the state government has declared a holiday for schools and junior colleges.
