Mumbai: Twelve people died in a fire that broke out at a shop on Khairani road in Mumbai in the early morning hours on Monday. The fire broke out at Khairani road's namkeen maker shop Bhanu Farsan.

The blaze erupted in the shop at Makaria Compound on Khairani Road around 4.25 am following which the structure collapsed, an official of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's disaster management cell said.


Senior Sub-inspector at Sakinaka Police station A Dharmadhikari has said that least 25 fire tenders have been rushed to the spot to douse the fire. The situation is now under control, he added.


People sleeping inside the shop got trapped inside while those sleeping outside escaped unhurt, police said. The 12 victims were rushed to a hospital where doctors declared them dead before admission.


The exact cause of the fire was yet to be ascertained, he added. The police have launched a probe to investigate into the matter.


In another incident, a major fire broke out in a chemical unit in Turbhe node of neighbouring Navi Mumbai last evening.


The blaze started at the unit, located in TTC area, at around 5 PM.


At least six fire tenders have been rushed to the spot to douse the fire, the official said without elaborating.
