But, according to the Twitter, it did not achieve that feat.

As per data of the micro-blogging site, the honour has gone to Fifth Harmony's song titled ' Down,' reports Entertainment Weekly.

Released on June 2, the Gucci Mane-featuring song was the pop group's first since the 2016 departure of Camila Cabello and appeared on their self-titled album, which dropped last week.

Cabello's own solo single, 'Crying in the Club,' also beat out 'Despacito' in terms of tweets generated.

Twitter's announcement isn't the first to suggest that not everyone sees 'Despacito' as the song of summer.

The song lost at the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards as fans voted for Lil Uzi Vert's "XO Tour Llif3" as the " Song of the Summer."

Recently, the song led the list for a 16th week, the most weeks at No. 1 ever for a single on Billboard charts.

The song is now tied with Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men's 'One Sweet Day,' which broke the record for the longest stay atop the Hot 100 and established the 16-week record that still stands to this day back in 1995.
