Guwahati: One person, likely a woman, was dead and four others injured in a suspected grenade blast in Karbi Anglong district in Assam on Tuesday.

According to media reports, police suspect that it was a hand grenade that exploded in Diphu, the headquarters of the district in the state. The deceased has been identified as Tuni Begum.


The blast comes on the same day as Prime Minister Narendra Modi kicked off BJP’s election campaign in Assam.


 


The prime minister addressed a public rally in Kokrajhar earlier in the day and is expected to address the students of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati in the evening.


PM Modi came down heavily on the Congress and his predecessor Manmohan Singh for failing the state while addressing a rally of the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF), a regional party with which the BJP forged an electoral alliance on Sunday.
