The victim, Visambhar Baghel, was injured in a scuffle at the 'dhaba' in Panar Para area of Jagdalpur town last night and later died at a local hospital during treatment, Bastar Superintendent of Police Ajay Yadav told PTI.

The victim's family alleged that he was beaten to death by policemen, the SP said.

As per preliminary investigation, Baghel was consuming liquor along with his relative Chatur at the roadside eatery last night when some policemen reached there, he said.

A fight broke out between them that turned into a violent clash, the SP said.

Baghel sustained injuries in the clash and was rushed to a local hospital by his relative where he succumbed during treatment, Yadav said.

The victim's wife, Hemwati, lodged a complaint that her husband was beaten to death, following which a case was registered in this connection and Kotwali Police Inspector Ashish Wasnik was tasked to probe the matter, he said.

"We have also conducted videography of the post-mortem carried out by a team of three doctors keeping in view the seriousness of the issue," the SP said.

Stern action would be taken against the guilty policemen, if the report establishes that the assault on the victim claimed his life, the SP added.
