New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Tuesday issued notices to Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Law Minister Somnath Bharti on pleas of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders seeking to declare their election void.
The petitioners alleged that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders had spend beyond the statutory limit of Rs 14 lakh to influence voters in the Delhi Assembly elections and requested the high court to declare their election null and void. According to PTI, former Delhi BJP chief Vijender Gupta filed the petition against Kejriwal who was his rival from the New Delhi constituency, while former city Mayor Arti Mehra moved the court against Bharti, who had defeated her from Malviya Nagar constituency in the 2013 Assembly polls.
Justice Vipin Sanghi issued notice to Kejriwal on Gupta`s plea, while Justice GS Sistani issued notice to Bharti on Mehra`s plea. They have been accused of having violated the Model Code of Conduct issued by the Election Commission of India, the provisions of the Representation of People Act and also the principles of the Constitution regarding free and fair elections.
