Nido Taniam death: Delhi HC asks Centre, state govt, police to file report
The Delhi High Court on Monday asked the Centre, Delhi government and the Delhi Police to file report on the incident wherein Arunachal Pradesh student Nido Taniam was allegedly killed after a brawl with some shopkeepers of Lajpat Nagar.

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Monday asked the Centre, Delhi government and the Delhi Police to file report on the incident wherein Arunachal Pradesh student Nido Taniam was allegedly killed after a brawl with some shopkeepers of Lajpat Nagar.
A bench of Chief Justice N V Ramana and Rajiv Sahai Endlaw demanded the report with details about the steps taken for safety of the people who hail from the North East and stay in Delhi.The bench also said the national capital belongs to everyone and the South Delhi incident highlights the matter of grave concern.
The court has also taken suo motu cognisance of Taniam`s death.
The incident took place last week when the teen had approached shopkeepers asking them for direction. However, they got into an altercation after the shopkeepers allegedly made fun of his hairstyle and passed racist comments. Taniam, son of Congress MLA Nido Pavitra, was allegedly beaten by the shopkeepers. He later died in sleep and was formally declared dead in hospital.
While autopsy report of Taniam is expected today, his death has evoked massive protests from the North Eastern community in the city. Several students from the North East have been carrying out protest against the racial discrimination.
