Amritsar: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh`s half-brother Daljeet Singh Kohli on Saturday said that he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for the development of Amritsar. Accepting that he has struck a deal with BJP and Akali Dal, Kohli said, "Yes there is a deal, it`s with BJP-Akali Dal for the development of Amritsar."
Kohli joined the BJP yesterday during an election rally here in the presence of BJP`s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi. The Gujarat chief minister addressed the rally yesterday, in favour of senior party leader Arun Jaitley, who is contesting from the Amritsar Lok Sabha seat.
Modi warmly welcomed him saying that his joining was not about BJP membership but about building blood relations.
The BJP and the Akali Dal are ruling partners in Punjab, as well as the constituents of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance.
Meanwhile, just a day after the BJP embarrassed the Congress by inducting Prime Minister Manmohan Singh`s step-brother, another step-brother today joined the Congress` road show here taken out by former chief minister Amarinder Singh. Surjit Singh Kohli, an entrepreneur, joined the Congress road show with Amarinder, the party`s candidate for the Amritsar Lok Sabha seat against senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader Arun Jaitley.
Daljit`s entry into the BJP fold was played up by the BJP leadership here, especially by Jaitley who is facing a tough fight against Amarinder.
Daljit, a textile exporter, had no political background earlier.
Daljit later told media that he joined the BJP as he was upset about the way that Manmohan Singh was treated by the Congress.
Manmohan Singh said Saturday he felt "very sad" at Daljit joining the BJP.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the Padma awards function in New Delhi, the prime minister said to a query: "I feel very sad. But I have no control over what others do. They are adults."
The prime minister`s family members had also expressed shock at Daljit`s "extremely wrong" and "shameful" decision to join the BJP.
