Severe heat wave conditions in Gujarat, breaks 100-year record in Ahmedabad
Apart from Ahmedabad, capital city Gandhinagar, and Deesa in Banaskantha district also recorded maximum temperature of 48 degrees Celsius.
Ahmedabad: Even as the eastern part of the country reels under the effects of Cyclone Roanu, extreme heat wave conditions are prevailing in the northern and western parts of India.
The mercury touched 48 degrees Celsius in Ahmedabad on Thursday, breaking 100-year record for maximum temperature in the city.
"The maximum temperature in Ahmedabad city was recorded at 48 degrees Celsius on Thursday. It has broken a 100-year record. As per the data, the city had recorded 47.8 degrees Celsius on May 27, 1916," said Jayanta Sarkar, director of meteorological centre of the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
Apart from Ahmedabad, capital city Gandhinagar, and Deesa in Banaskantha district also recorded maximum temperature of 48 degrees Celsius.
With the death of one person in Ahmedabad on Thursday, the total number of heat-related deaths reached four this summer, Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation said.
Several other cities in Gujarat recorded over 45 degree Celsius temperature including Kandla (47.7), Surendranagar (47.5), Idar (47.2), Amreli (46.8 degrees), and Rajkot 46 degrees Celsius.
