Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) has developed a state-of-the-art package for life assessment of power transformers and for suggesting life-enhancing measures for the equipment.
The comprehensive, scientifically proven Residual Life Assessment (RLA) and condition monitoring techniques for transformers, developed indigenously by BHEL's corporate research and development division, are much more accurate and efficient than existing methods, a company statement said. BHEL's cost-effective RLA package would enable assessing of the exact residual life and also offer remedial measures for prolonging the life of transformers, whereas existing operation and maintenance methods do not provide such information, particularly about the health of the winding or the remaining life of the transformer.
BHEL has carried out RLA studies for several transformers at Haryana Power Generation Corporation Ltd, faridabad NTPC Badarpur, Bhakra Beas Management Board, Dhulkot and Jamalpur and Hindustan Zinc Ltd, Udaipur. At present, RLA of a transformer is under execution at Hindalco, Renusagar.

RLA studies and condition monitoring techniques can be applied on transformers of any rating or age, the statement added.
