The anthrax scare on Tuesday reached the Rashtrapati Bhawan when an envelope suspected to contain some powdery substance was received there. The letter, addressed to an official of the President’s residence, was received at around noon, deputy commissioner of police (New Delhi) Mukesh Meena said. Suspecting it to contain anthrax spores, the letter was immediately referred to police which passed it on to the National Institute of Communicable Diseases (NICD) for chemical examination, Meena said.
Meanwhile, a similar letter received at the law ministry last week has tested negative for anthrax spores, he said. Ever since the anthrax scare gripped the US and many parts of the world following the American-led strikes against Afghanistan, suspicious letters have been received in the ministries of home, health, law, other departments and private residences but no harmful contents have been found in any envelope.
One of these letters was addressed to home minister L K Advani and was received in his office on October 23. Delhi Police is conducting an inquiry to ascertain the sources of such letters.
The NICD, which is the nodal institute to conduct chemical examinations on such suspicious letters in the country, has received more than 95 samples from across the county so far.
