US President George W Bush on Friday nominated Air Force General Richard Myers as the new Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
He will replace General Henry Shelton who is retiring on September 30.
Bush also announced the nomination of Marine Corps General Peter Pace, Commander-in-Chief, Southern Command, as Vice Chief of the Joint Chiefs.
Gen Myers is a Vietnam War fighter pilot and former head of the US Space Command, which qualifies him to head National Missile Defence, one of the topmost priorities of President Bush.
Announcing Gen Meyers appointment from Crawford, Bush pointed out that US armed forces have to meet current threats while preparing itself for 'tough challenges' ahead.
