Awareness against osteoroposis, menopause emphasised

Identifying osteoroposis, a common disease of the bone, and problems due to menopause as "silent killer", leading doctors today stressed on enhancing awareness among masses to minimise the loss.

Patna: Identifying osteoroposis, a common disease of the bone, and problems due to menopause as "silent killer", leading doctors today stressed on enhancing awareness among masses to minimise the loss.

The concerns on osteoroposis and menopausal problems were raised by doctors hailing from Indian Menopause Society and Global Orthopedic Forum.

Leading Orthopedic Surgeon Amulya Kumar Singh, who is Secretary of Global Orthopedic Forum, told reporters that nearly six crore population in the country are suffering from osteproposis which if not taken care of properly results in loss of life.

He said women are more at risk of osteoroposis then men because of genetic factors, age, menopause, lifestyle.

Low calcium intake especially before 30 years of age contributes to poor bone density, early bone loss and an increased risk of fractures, he added.

Kusum Gopal Kapoor said that osteoroposis is a common disease of bone characterised by decreased bone mass and bone strength.

Pramila Modi said that in early stages of bone loss there is no pain or symptoms. But, once bones have been weakened by osteoroposis it leads to back pain, loss of height, stooped posture, fracture of the vertebrae.

Usha Didwania said that till 30-35 years the rate of formation of bone is more than what it sheds. .

They expressed concern over problems due to untimely menopause on the World Menopause Day and stressed on enhancing awareness among women about menopausal problems.

Kusum Gopal Kapoor said that menopausal problems are more in states like Bihar, West Bengal and Odisha due to low literacy level in comparison to highly literate state like Kerala.

They expressed willingness to collaborate with the government in running awareness drive particularly in the rural areas regarding osteoroposis and menopausal problems.
