Mumbai: In what could be termed as a significant medical marvel, former Miss World Diana Hayden gave birth to a baby girl on Saturday out of an egg she froze eight years ago.

As per the Times of India report, the 42-year-old Bollywood personality was 32 when she read about egg freezing technology for the first time in 2005. Between October 2007 and March 2008, she froze 16 eggs with infertility specialist Dr Nandita Palshetkar.

“I froze my eggs for two reasons: I was busy with my career at that time and, more important, I was very clear that I was going to wait to fall in love and marry before having a baby,” Diana, who gave birth in the Surya Mother and Child Hospital in Santa Cruz, was quoted as saying to TOI.

The birth of Arya Hayden proves that egg freezing works and could help women, especially working women who want to delay childbearing in order to pursue their career or other goals.

“A career woman need not think about her biological clock and get pressurized into getting married earlier than she wants to or have a baby when she isn't ready,” Hayden added.

Hayden, who is married American Collin Dick two years ago, was diagnosed with endometriosis - a condition resulting from the appearance of endometrial tissue outside the womb, making it difficult for women to produce quality eggs.

Hayden and Collin decided to go for a test-tube baby and thaw Diana's frozen eggs.

It is said that Hayden's daughter weighed 3.7kg and was 55cm long.

While Arya's birth may bring smiles to faces of many women, egg freezing still remains to be a controversial matter.

As per a new study, the process of freezing and thawing could damage eggs and reduce a woman's chance of becoming a mother.
