Shimla: A swift rescue effort by Border Roads Organisation (BRO) saved lives of four of its personnel, who had got buried under 10 feet of snow in Himachal Pradesh's Lahaul area.

The incident happened a few days back, when a unit of BRO officials was coming down a mountain and was hit by an avalanche. Though, almost all the BRO men were able to move to a safer place, four jawans got stuck in the avalanche.


However, within 20 minutes the BRO rescue removed the snow and saved their colleagues.


Ten soldiers were killed when an avalanche hit the Army`s Sonam post at Siachen on February 3. Lance Naik Hanumanthappa Koppad, who was rescued alive after being buried under snow for six days, died on February 11 in an Army hospital in Delhi.


The 10 soldiers buried in the avalanche were: Subedar Nagesha TT, resident of village Tejur, Hassan district Karnataka; Havaldar Elum alai M, resident of village Dukkam Parai, Vellore district, Tamil Nadu; Lance Havildar S. Kumar, resident of village Kumanan Thozhu, Teni district, Tamil Nadu; Lance Naik Sudheesh B, resident of village Monroethuruth, Kollam district, Kerala; Lance Naik Hanamanthappa Koppad, resident of village Betadur, Dharwad district, Karnataka; Sepoy Mahesha PN, resident of village HD Kote, Mysore district, Karnataka; Sepoy Ganesan G, resident of village Chokkathevan Patti, Madurai district, Tamil Nadu; Sepoy Rama Moorthy N, resident of village Gudisa tana Palli, Krishna Giri district, Tamil Nadu; Sepoy Mustaq Ahmed S, resident of village Parnapalle, Kurnool district, Andhra Pradesh; and Sepoy Nursing Assistant Suryawanshi SV, resident of village Maskarwadi, Satara district, Maharashtra.
