Another row in the making? Govt dissolves IGNCA board, appoints new chairman
In a move which could irk the Congress, the Narendra Modi government has dissolved the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA) board.
New Delhi: In a move which could irk the Congress, the Narendra Modi government has dissolved the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA) board.
Union Culture Minister Mahesh Sharma dissolved the IGNCA board and appointed a new 20-member team.
The central government has appointed noted journalist and Gandhian scholar Ram Bahadur Rai as next IGNCA chairman.
Justifying government's decision, the Union Minister said, "It is a continuous process and this is not for first time it has been done, it was done earlier also."
"IGNCA will see new changes, and this will serve the purpose for which it has been created," the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader said.
The IGNCA, established in memory of former prime minister Indira Gandhi, is visualised as a centre encompassing the study and experience of all the arts -- each form with its own integrity, yet within a dimension of mutual interdependence, interrelated with nature, social structure and cosmology.
The IGNCA was launched on 19th November, 1985 by the late prime minister Rajiv Gandhi.
