As per a report in Catch News, Shukla, who had quit Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) after 32-years service and joined Congress, said that , “I have seen many governments coming to power, but it was for the first time when I saw one man (Modi) winning the elections based on complete lies.”

Further using JNUSU president Kanhaiya Kumar's popular 'azadi' slogan, she said that she wants 'azadi' (freedom) from RSS and hardcore Hindutva.

A former MP from Janjgir constituency of Chhattisgarh, Karuna was defeated by Charan Das Mahant of Congress from Korba in 2009.

However, on February 27, 2014, she joined the Congress to contest 2014 Lok Sabha election from Bilaspur constituency in Chhattisgarh, but was defeated again.
