As per the Ministry of External Affairs, the number of Indians being deported from the US has gone up in recent days and those deported include not just students but also tourists and businesspersons.

The MEA in an advisory said “some Indian nationals travelling on business/tourism/work visas have also been deported (from the US)”.

Apart from Indian students headed to two California universities, others admitted to different educational institutions were also deported or stopped from entering the US, the ministry said.

The MEA advisory said while the Indian government has pressed the US to “honour the visas issued by their own Embassy/Consulates”, travellers are also advised to carry “proper authorization and capacities”.

The deportations from Chicago and San Francisco include “holders of B-1 and B-2 US visas, for tourists and businesspersons, and H-1s, which are work permits”, a ministry official said, as per a report in Hindustan Times.

“These are not fraud visas but genuine visas issued by the US — it seems one section of the US administration is not honouring what the other one is doing,” the MEA official added.
