Srinagar: Two days after the demise of Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, Governor’s rule was imposed in the state with effect from Saturday.
The rule came into force after PDP chief and former CM's daughter Mehbooba Mufti refused to take oath as Chief Minister before the traditional four-day period of mourning ends. Governor's rule will last in the state till Mehbooba agrees to take oath as the new CM of the state.
Though Mehbooba, the PDP chief, was set to take over the charges of CM of PDP-BJP coalition government in the state, she refused to take oath until Chahurram - the four-day mourning period for Kashmiri Muslims, a period during which ceremonial functions are avoided, is over.
If and when she takes charge of Jammu and Kashmir, Mehbooba Mufti will have to prove her majority on the floor of the 87-member assembly. She will also have to get elected to the state assembly or be nominated to the state legislative council (upper house) within six months.
At present, Mehbooba represents Anantnag Assembly in the Lok Sabha. After taking the oath, Mehboob would become the first woman Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir.
However, as per the report, Mehbooba has made it clear to her part leader that she will not take the oath as CM immediately after the end of the mourning period.
Syeed, who led the first coalition government in the state, was admitted to a New Delhi-based hospital and died 14 days after he was hospitalized.
