More people died in India while taking selfies last year than anywhere else

In 2015, at least 27 people died across the world in 2015 while clicking selfies - of these, about half of the deaths occurred in India.

New Delhi: That Indians have become 'selfie-crazy' was already evident. But what has come as a shock is the fact that more people died taking selfies in India last year than anywhere else in the world!

A simple act of clicking a picture of the self has become a safety hazard in India.

As per The Washington Post, at least 27 people died across the world in 2015 while clicking selfies – of these, about half of the deaths occurred in India.

Sample some of the incidents: a man died while trying to take selfie in front of an oncoming train; another was killed when his boat tipped over at a picnic; one more lost his life when a cliff the person was standing on gave way and fell into a 60-foot ravine; while one more slipped from the edge of a scenic river canal.

A Japanese tourist was killed in September when he was trying to take a selfie at the Taj Mahal – he tripped over and fell down the steps, suffering fatal head injuries.

In Mumbai, a young girl lost her life earlier this month when she and her two friends were swept away into the Arabian Sea while taking selfies in a rocky part of Bandra. A man who jumped in to save them also drowned.

Following the incident, the Mumbai Police has prepared a list of 16 “no-selfie zones” where patrolling would be intensified.
