Ranchi: A group of 12 women have taken an initiative to drive auto-rickshaws exclusively for female passengers in Ranchi. These auto-rickshaws have been painted pink, with the drivers also wearing a uniform of the same colour.
The initiative has been well received by female passengers, who state that they feel more secure travelling in these auto-rickshaws.
"I feel very safe when I travel in the pink autos. We can sit in the front or at the back, unlike in normal autos. Many times men don`t adjust and we find it difficult, which is why we use these autos," said Usha, a passenger.
Lalita Devi, one of the drivers, said she was encouraged by her husband to join the group.
"I used to sew clothes but didn`t feel that I was utilising my time properly. So I thought of learning something and started with the auto. My husband also supported me. I feel very happy and confident when I drive the auto as I have achieved something in life," said Devi.
Pink Auto Drivers Association president Arti Behra said women drivers in the city have become independent and are being respected in their family.
"The situation of these women auto drivers was very bad as they were just able to provide one meal a day to their family and were not able to send their children to proper schools. Now that they are driving autos and able to run their houses smoothly, even send their kids to proper schools. Now they are working properly," she said.
