New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday condoled the demise of former Lok Sabha speaker Balram Jakhar and described him as a popular leader.

" Balram Jakhar ji was a popular leader who enriched our Parliamentary democracy in his long political journey. Saddened by his demise. RIP," Prime Minister Modi tweeted.


Jakhar breathed his last at his residence in the national capital this morning. He was 92 years old.


The Congress veteran served as the Speaker of Lok Sabha from 1980 to 1989. As the Speaker of Lok Sabha, he digitised parliamentary works.


He was also the Governor of Madhya Pradesh from June 30, 2004 to May 30, 2009.
